Each year 17 million tonnes of food waste is produced in the UK alone with around 30% of this coming from large scale food manufacturers. Until now this waste has been being sent to landfill, but it has now been recognised that this is no longer a suitable option, due to both space and the environmental repercussions associated with land filling waste. |

EnCycle is a new initiative which has been developed by Inetec to address a growing problem within the UK, food waste. |

Biomass FuelThe EnCycle project addresses this problem by processing the food waste and its associated non-recyclable packaging waste into a biomass fuel, called Food Derived Fuel (FDF), which is then used to create renewable electricity. The process is energy efficient and an environmentally friendly solution which could change the way food waste is handled within the UK. In its short lifespan EnCycle have already secured contracts with three of the top ten UK food producers Northern Foods, Greencore and Greggs and will be processing all of their food and non-recyclable packaging waste when the first plant comes online in early 2008. A full planning application document has now been submitted for this plant and is currently being processed. Renewable Energy TargetThe first of ten proposed developments will be located in the North East of England and will divert around 170,000 tonnes of waste per year away from landfill, while producing enough renewable energy, around 24MW, to surpass the governments renewable energy target for the whole of the North East Lincolnshire region. Food WasteFuture develops are proposed for the North West, Midlands, South East, South West and South Wales in a bid to utilise the valuable resource held within the food waste, whilst driving the UK towards a greener future.
